AMPP Launches Shipbuilding Network/USA to Support Reshoring, Workforce Growth and National Security

Houston, Texas – (May 29, 2025) — The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) today announced the formation of the AMPP Shipbuilding Network/USA, a new initiative designed to support the resurgence of American shipbuilding in alignment with recent U.S. Congressional legislation and a White House Executive Order focused on reshoring critical manufacturing and defense infrastructure.

As interest grows across sectors in revitalizing U.S. maritime capabilities, AMPP has been actively collaborating with peer organizations to learn from one another on emerging policy and industry shifts related to shipbuilding, repair, maintenance, and modernization. The AMPP Shipbuilding Network/USA will serve as a strategic platform to address critical challenges, including corrosion control, workforce shortages, outdated standards, and the adoption of advanced technologies.

“This is a pivotal moment for the maritime industry,” said AMPP CEO Alan Thomas. “Through this new Network, AMPP is committed to helping unify voices across industry, government, and academia to strengthen our national and economic security, revitalize shipyards, and ensure the sustainability of the U.S. fleet through advanced materials protection practices. We are proud to serve as a key partner in the USA's effort to strengthen maritime readiness.”

The Network’s objectives include:

  • Advancing corrosion prevention and materials protection strategies
  • Expanding pipelines for certified maritime and coatings professionals
  • Modernizing outdated standards and advocating for best practices
  • Accelerating integration of emerging technologies in shipbuilding

By convening key stakeholders, the AMPP Shipbuilding Network/USA aims to influence shipbuilding best practices and help guide future U.S. maritime policy. The initiative also seeks to spark a national conversation about modernizing shipyard operations and the importance of corrosion management in maintaining defense readiness.

Membership and Participation
The AMPP Shipbuilding Network/USA is open to all AMPP members involved in shipbuilding, maintenance, coatings, or maritime infrastructure, with a particular focus on U.S.-based participants.
