Plural Component Application for Polyureas and High Solid Coatings (PLURAL) Level 1/2

This course is designed to train and certify applicators in the application of protective coatings by airless spray using plural component spray equipment. The program focus is on the application of two component high solids, polyurethanes, and polyurea coatings in a marine/industrial environment on steel or concrete.

Who Should Attend

Contractors, project supervisors, and craftworkers involved in applying plural component technology.

Benefits of Attending

After attending this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the advantages of plural component spray technology
  • Describe a two component high solid, polyurethane, and polyurea protective coating
  • Recognize the importance of when and how coatings are mixed on a plural component spray pump
  • Distinguish among the various methods of mixing: manual, at the gun, and after the manifold
  • Apply plural component coatings to concrete and steel in a manner that meets the requirements of a given job specification

Course/Exam Content

  • Introduction and overview of plural component spray technology
  • Equipment operational systems
  • Troubleshooting
  • Characteristics of plural component coatings
  • Applying touch-up of single coat coatings by brush and/or roll

Course format

Level 1: Two days- 16 Hours – Lecture + Written Exam

Level 2: One day – 8 Hours – Hands On Spray Exam

The Level 1 classroom session consists of a 6-8 hour review of the fundamentals of plural component spray technology. The review will cover the fundamentals of the process of spraying two component coatings using airless plural component spray pumps (e.g., material ratio, material viscosity, mixing, ambient conditions for application and curing, product data sheets, material safety data sheets, spray technique), equipment operation, troubleshooting basics and lessons learned, coating materials appropriate for plural component spray, and quality control basics.

The Level 2 hands-on assessment requires each student to operate two different types of plural component pumps and explain their operations. Candidates must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during the hands-on workshop and must be able to answer questions about troubleshooting in cases where things go wrong with the spray pump operation. In order to pass, you must score 90% or better on the Level 2 exam.

There will be a Level 1 written, multiple-choice exam (25 questions). If a candidate fails, he or she must retake the exam. A total of 70 points is required to pass the Level 1 written exam. Candidates wishing to achieve the Level 2 Certification and CEUs must attend all 24 hours of the program and pass the Level 1 written exam with a score of 70% and the hands-on Level 2 exam with a score of 90%.
