AMPP Research Programs

AMPP Research is driven by the Research, Innovation & Technical Advancement (RITA) Program Committee, which connects AMPP to the ideas, people, and discoveries shaping the future of materials protection and performance. Through RITA, AMPP brings together researchers, industry leaders, asset owners, and technical experts from around the world to explore emerging technologies, identify critical knowledge gaps, and accelerate the development of practical, real-world solutions. By convening global subject matter experts and fostering collaboration across industry, academia, and government, AMPP Research helps translate innovation into actionable insight—strengthening technical practice, informing standards and programs, and advancing the state of corrosion control, coatings, and materials engineering.

Ways to get involved

Poster Session

The AMPP Research Society is a dedicated community within AMPP for members who are actively engaged in research across materials protection and performance. It brings together researchers from industry, academia, and government to connect, collaborate, and shape the technical direction of the profession. Supported by the Research, Innovation & Technical Advancement (RITA) Program Committee, the Research Society leads and participates in research-focused initiatives, forums, and collaborations that are best driven by the research community itself. Through this structure, AMPP empowers researchers to influence priorities, share emerging knowledge, and strengthen the link between research, standards, and real-world application.

The Research Society Leadership Council (RSLC) provides leadership and direction for the AMPP Research Society, ensuring that the research community plays an active role in shaping AMPP’s research agenda and technical programming. Working in close coordination with RITA, the RSLC oversees key research initiatives, including the Sedrik Seed Grant, which supports early-stage and emerging research, as well as flagship conference programs such as the Research in Progress and Research Topical Symposia and the Student Poster Session.

Research Community of Interest

Our Research Community of Interest (found below) provides a centralized platform to discuss current issues, new and emerging technologies, and ways to volunteer with the AMPP Research Program on a continuous basis.

Programs for Students and New Researchers

Student Poster Session

Student Poster Session

The Student Poster Session at each AMPP Annual Conference encourages students to become active in AMPP and present the results of their work to the membership.

Students posters will be presented on one of three categories:

  • Marcel Pourbaix, focusing on Corrosion Science
  • Mars Fontana, focusing on Corrosion Engineering
  • Harvey Herro-Appleman, focusing on Applied Materials Protection Technology
  • David Shifler Undergraduate Award

First-, second-, and third-place prizes are awarded to winners in each category.

Dr. A. John Sedriks Seed Grant

The Research Society solicits proposals for new corrosion research every two years for projects covering new areas of corrosion research; significant expansion of current research within the corrosion field; or applied research, which will likely have practical value to business and industry.

The grant is intended to encourage new university researchers to study the corrosion of engineering materials. The recipient may request funding for a second year upon submission of a satisfactory progress report because it is assumed most projects will take two years.

Submission for the 2026 grant are open here through February 15.
